How Do Kids Choose Movies

How do kids choose their movies? It’s a question many parents ask themselves. Young kids (and many adults) are so stressed about watching each movie the minute it hits the big screen that enormous queues are formed and tickets sell out before you even get half way to the door.

40 years ago, movies were not a big part of everyday life. In the 60?s, kids spent more time outside, or reading and socialising than they do today. Movies back then were a luxury not everyone could afford. When it could be afforded it was only ever at the cinema. Over the past 40 year period, movie watching habits have changed dramatically. In 2000, there was a major shift. From one channel televisions and occasional cinema outings, now-a-days children can watch any of a number of different channels and going to the cinema is a common occurrence. In the past few years, movie watching has become very popular and easy to access; families can borrow movies from the video store, from the library, download them from the internet and watch than in the comfort of their home. New movies come out in the cinema every week.

WHY do kids choose movies?

Today, movies have become a measurement of social standing. Children who haven’t seen a certain movie are “way uncool”, and are perfectly aware of what they have missed out. The other children in their class will make them aware of exactly what goes on in every movie. This creates a lot of pressure on parents. All you need to do to understand how serious the pressure is, is simply see the massive queues at the cinema on the release dates of every new movie. It is very hard for people, and especially young kids to wait a week or two weeks after the release of a new movie to go and see it. Just the thought of missing out, or being the last person to see the movie is quite stressful.

There are many movies targeted at young children that come out regularly. For movie makers, children’s’ movies are a great investment since young kids are such a big market. Every time kids go to a movie, at least one grownup must join them. This more than doubles the profit, not to mention the sales of related products that get sold after the movie ? McDonald toys, figurines etc.

Movies today are advertised as far back as a year in advance. Posters are put up in every spare space, in shopping centres and food-courts. TV ads for certain movies start as early as 6 months before a movie comes out. Even 3-year olds can tell you they are going to watch a movie that will come out in 6 months. School holidays are especially hard for parents since most movies come out during the school holidays. Sometimes, over a period of two or three weeks or holiday, there are over six movies to watch. In the local cinema there is only a two to three week window in which to watch all the movies that have come out. Young kids are afraid to miss out. Missing out is a very hard feeling for young kids to deal with and this puts pressure on their parents.

A good way to help parents handle the pressure is to assure kids they will be able to see the movie later. The movie will still be there in a week, even too weeks. If its not, it probably wasn’t worth it, and if they still want to see it, it can be borrowed from the video store or downloaded at a much cheaper price. Knowing this will relieve the stress of missing out on that great movie that everyone’s raving about and when you go to the cinema, you won’t have to wait in line for half an hour and you’ll definitely have a ticket when you get to the desk.

Photography – Understanding Film Vs Digital Cameras

Emulsion film, as a medium for capturing photographic images, has been around in one form or another for more than 150 years. But due to the rapidly growing popularity of digital cameras, newcomers to photography are sometimes surprised to discover that film is still being manufactured and sold for all-purpose photography. Once their first digital camera is in hand, and they have mastered the art of recording images electronically, and storing them as files, the idea of using film seems a strange concept indeed.

So why is film still being used by some photographers?

To understand the answer to this, we will need to take a look at the differences between film stock and the modern image sensors that make digital cameras possible.

Let’s start with the newer technology: the light sensitive electronic surface that sits at the center of a digital camera, and which is known as an image sensor. Basically these sensors are a specialized form of microchip. But they do not carry out any computations. Instead, all they do is measure the amount of light that falls on different parts of the sensor surface in a given time window. If you were to zoom in on one of these thumbnail-sized chips, blowing it up to the size of a football stadium, you would see that the surface of the sensor looked a lot like your tiled kitchen floor.

Each one of those square tiles represents a separate photodiode, capable of measuring just the amount of light that falls on it. In fact, sitting just above each photodiode is a colored filter. The filter is there to block all but the wavelength of light that it sends on to the photodiode. These filters come in red, green, and blue, so that any given photodiode will be measuring only the intensity of light for the particular color of the filter sitting above it.

Imagine for the moment that every tile on that kitchen floor is green. Now take one row of tiles and color every second tile blue. For the next row of tiles, color every second tile red, but shift the red tiles across by one space so that the red tiles appear beneath the green tiles of the previous row. Then repeat the process with blue tiles on the next row, and so on, until the entire floor is covered with these alternate rows of green/blue and green/red tiles. This is just what the surface of the image sensor looks like when seen close up.

In point of fact, this particular arrangement of colored filters, with twice as many green pixels as either red or blue, is known as a Bayer array. It is the most commonly used color filtering method employed in digital cameras, but it is by no means the only one used. Because the human eye is more sensitive to green light than red or blue, the green-favoring of the Bayer system actually works to its advantage when the colors are finally combined to produce printable images.

Every time a digital camera is used to record an image, this mosaic of colored tiles captures the various intensities of red, green, and blue light. So every photodiode, or “electronic pixel”, has associated with it a color and a number. If a perfectly green lime was being photographed, the red and blue pixels would have the number zero associated with them, while the green pixels around them would carry non-zero numbers. In reality, small contributions of red and blue light would be mixed with much stronger green contributions to produce the hues of green that color the skin of the lime.

All of this information is whisked away from the image sensor and stored in a temporary image buffer, later to be transferred to the memory card used by digital cameras to store images as files. Software is then used to manipulate the images (or not) before they are finally sent to a photo printer.

The resolution of the images is determined by the number of photodiodes (pixels) that can be crammed onto the surface of an image sensor. These days it is not uncommon to find about 4000 pixels along one edge of the sensor, and 2500 along the other. The product of these numbers is 10 million, or 10 megapixels in the digital camera parlance.

So, how does this compare with film resolution?

Well, these days the brand of film stock recognized as offering the finest resolution is Fuji’s Velvia 50 RVP. While it is not possible to ascribe a grain size to the emulsion that is used in slide film (there are a number of different sized grains in the dyes that make up the emulsion) an effective number of pixels per inch can be assigned to film stock based on how many closely-spaced “thin lines” can be resolved in the laboratory. The effective PPI, or pixels per inch, for Velvia is about 4000. This translates, assuming a 35mm frame size, to about 22 megapixels of image resolution. For better known film brands, like Kodachrome, the number is closer to 9 megapixels.

Clearly, with current top-end digital SLR models offering resolutions that surpass 20 megapixels, the numerical advantage that film once offered in terms of image resolution has all but vanished. Digital cameras now match the image resolution of even the very best film stocks, and will surpass them as image sensor technology continues to improve.

So now we are back to our still-answered question: why is film stock still produced when digital imagery is on a par with it, at least in terms of resolution?

The answer is that resolution is by no means the full story when it comes to creating a great image. As mentioned, emulsions contain a range of grain sizes and dye components that work together to produce effects that cannot easily be reproduced with three sets of red, green, and blue numbers. Velvia, for instance, adds more warmth to the actual recorded colors, and produces landscape images that look better than the real thing.

Fortunately for us, the makers of film stock, and the makers of digital cameras, are not, by and large, the same people. Otherwise film stock might disappear a lot more quickly from the world of photography. That probably will not happen for a while though. Not as long as film stock can produce images that surpass the quality of digital methods. Until that is no longer the case, photographic film will have a place in the world of photography.

To help you select a suitable digital camera to get started with, I have put together an article for you about how to find the right Beginner Digital Camera.

Festival Fever is Alive in Nice

Nice has fast become a highly popular destination for those seeking a quiet French escape. But what if you?re looking for something a bit more vibrant? Well, actually, beneath that ?nice? persona is a bit of a party animal city, with plenty of fun to be had.

When many cities are still sleeping off the winter, the festival season of fun kicks off with the Nice Carnival in February. This is a colourful and over-the-top celebration that lasts for two weeks and is jam-packed full of fancy dress processions, rock concerts and huge firework displays.

And perhaps the most colourful element of the whole Carnival event is the giant flower parades ? with upwards of twenty floats decorated with fresh flowers of every colour and variety. Men and women in fancy dress stand aboard the floats and throw flowers to onlookers – it?s eccentric, over-the-top and utterly indulgent.

Next on the fiesta calendar is the Manca Festival, which takes place at the end of March and runs into early April. A bit like the Nice Carnival ? and indeed like the majority of Nice festivals ? it is a hectic and busy schedule of events. A different event is held each night and it is pot-luck as to what it will be; anything from jazz to classical music, theatre, contemporary dance, film screenings or art exhibits.

For those of you who are interested in getting to grips with Nice?s more traditional culture, there is the Festival Mondial de Folklore. Folk music and dance date back to Nice?s ancient past and this four day festival during May includes traditional singing, dancing and music concerts. What’s more, in mid-June there is the Sacred Music Festival, which again celebrates the more traditional music of the country; with spiritual hymns, chamber concerts and organ recitals taking place in beautiful churches across Nice.

If you think you?ve got the energy to take it on, then July might just be the best month to visit. Not only will the sun be high in the sky, but it is also when the renowned Jazz Festival takes place each year ? attracting some 50,000 visitors. The city becomes more vibrant than ever, where the emphasis is on modern jazz; but recently it has also attracted famous names from other genres of contemporary music ? such as Jamiroquai and Joss Stone.

With all this excitement taking place non-stop throughout the year, it is important that you prepare well in advance for when you?re going to take your flights to Nice – to make the most of one of the many festivals taking place.

Learn the Procedures Done in Movie Files Conversion

Movie converters are widely available in the market, on the internet and as discussed in computer handbooks and other computer reading materials. There are already popular movie converters that have swamped the market which include MPEG converter, the AVI converter, the DivX converter, the QT converter and many other brand names of converters. However, there are also software providers that offer movie converters that comprised all the features and specifications of all the key components of popular movie converters name. This is what the public and the users worldwide should be aware of.

The Superpower Movie Converters

The superpower movie converters can actually create and convert movie files like video files from one format to another desirable format. So for instance, you can choose to convert AVI format to MPEG format, or MPEG format to DivX format or vice versa. In some instances you can also convert movie files into DivX format provided that you computer is powered by DivX codec. Hence, you can instantly convert various formats like AVI, MPEG, Quicktime to DivX format. Using movie converters like the DivX converter, there are several tasks that can be processed at the same times as well. It is also being encouraged to create various conversion profiles for ease of reference. There are even movie converter programs that are provided with specific and comprehensive conversion processes, apart from the nice and organized interface.

What are the files that you can convert to movie files?

The idea that you can convert files into movie files leads the user to identification that movie clips, animations, slide shows, and other related files can be converted into a movie format if proper procedures are done. And since you are aware that the usual movie formats are WMV, MPEG, MOV, and AVI, you also have your reasons why you would resort to convert such files into movie files. At this point, you should also remember that when you resort to movie conversion you are also entertaining the fact that you can cause some changes in the quality of the files once you convert it into movie files. More so, the changes in qualities and to some extent the loss of quality of the file that is being converted depends on the format and the settings that you will select when movie files conversion procedures are executed.

The Movie Files Conversion Processing

1. In movie-file conversion or the video editing process it is recommended that you retain the video format of the original file. This needs to be done until the editing is complete.

2. If you capture video files from digital systems and other devices like the digital camcorder, maintain the setting that the camcorder’s software allow. For the record, camcorder files are typically stored in AVI format. However, the drawback is, AVI format can cause huge storage in your hard drive memory which can result in chock-full storage.

3. Take note of your reason why you would want to convert your movie file. So you have to consider if you are going to create a DVD, or it could also be that you want to save movie files in your iPod and cell phones so you can listen and watch video files with your friends. Your reason can also mean, that you want to post a movie file on the internet so that you can share it to other users and have an interaction with them through the file you posted.

4. DVD creation requires MPEG2 format. There are various software products available in the market to execute MPEG2 conversion. Such products provide you with options to eventually make the whole process of MPEG2 conversion a lot easier. In fact, there are kinds of software and video and editing software packages that are designed to have particular setting. This is to help you create video files that are VCD compliant.

5. If you will post movie files on the internet, then you have to convert your files into smaller file which can be in Windows Media File format or WMV format, MPEG4, and DivX format. But, because of the resizing impact on the movie file, the quality will be compromised as well. However, if the format is in smaller size then you can expect a lot of viewers to view your files.

6. Files that are created as portable videos from PDAs, cell phones and iPods can be compressed in MPEG4 format. Video editing formats packages are available online. But then again doing such conversion will affect the quality of the movie files you want to convert.

A Window Film Fight Back

Every year around this time there is a steady drumbeat heard throughout the state of Florida. Hurricanes are coming for sure! Each year we consider he alternatives that might give us some protection against the powerful winds. Our collective memory isn’t so short that we’ve forgotten Hurricane Charlie, Frances, Wilma or Katrina. The Tampa Bay area was fortunate in missing the brunt of these storms, but the small taste of the howling winds left us shaking our heads and thanking God for the hard right hand turn of Charlie. The Bottom line: We all know we need to do something , but just what?

The Window Film business has generally been circumspect when it comes down o overstatements of benefits. The best security films like Vista and LLumar Magnum films have been strenuously been tested at independent labs. These tests indicate that the 8 ML thick films properly installed with a wet silicone sealant around the perimeter can withstand very high winds and an impact from a 4.5 missile shot from a cannon gun. The key is the 8 ML thickness of the film since no window film less than that thickness can pass the test threshold of impact and cycling. Window films , I repeat, WINDOW FILMS like Vista and LLumar Magnum properly installed can protect homes and dramatically limit the flying glass and maintain the structural integrity of the windows These same films reduce high energy costs since they reduce the heat gain by 75% if you select a darker or more reflective film type. These fims reduce the UV by 99.9% . UV is a key factor in Skin Cancer and an obvious destroyer of home furnishings . Window Films slow down an intruder, providing covert 24/7 protection against smash and grab or simply an errant golf ball. Yet the careful window film provider must always be clear that no matter the benefit, despite the most stringent and exact installation properly following the manufacturers guidelines or the International Window Film Associations guidelines, these films are not hurricane proof! The shutter companies that meet the larger missile test criteria of 9 LBS decry any benefit for window film installations. I wonder at the % of homeowners that can afford their product? As a strong believer in window film and the features advantages and benefits I advise consumers that if they can afford to get these expensive shutters they should buy them. The other 364 days of the year my Vta Window Films and LLumar Magnum Films will still be working.

Austin Area Festivals: Music and More

What do music, chili peppers, bamboo, wine, watermelon, ice cream and Eeyore the donkey from Winnie the Pooh have in common?

They all have festivals devoted to them in Austin or nearby towns. In fact, there are so many festivals of all kinds in the Austin area that it is difficult to keep track of them. The Austin American-Statesman apparently gave up trying to keep count back in 2004, judging by a recent visit to the festivals page on their current website a quick count there reveals there were more than 50 festivals in existence then, and the compilers of the list noted that those were just some of the festivals.

Other festivals have appeared since then. The first-ever Pachanga Latino Music Festival, for instance, was held on May 31st of this year. The second annual Ice Cream Festival will take place on August 9.

Of course, everyone knows about the Austin City Limits Music Festival and the South by Southwest Conferences and Festivals. Those events feature what Austin has become known for around the world; great live music. Tens of thousands of music lovers flock to these events to see the international, national and regional acts that they showcase. These events bring in huge amounts of money to the Austin economy. In fact, SXSW is Austin’s highest money-making public event, as reported by Wikipedia.

There are many more music festivals in the Austin area as well. The Old Settler’s Reunion in nearby Driftwood, Texas attracts some of the premier national bluegrass and Americana acts, as well as many of the best regional Texas music groups and songwriters. This festival happens every April and attracts thousands of music fans to the beautiful grounds at the Salt Lick Pavilion and Camp Ben McCulloch.

The Reggae Festival, also in April, and the Austin Celtic Festival in November are just two more of the events held in Austin that feature music as their main raison d’etre. Of course, many other festivals include music in their programs as well. Some of these include Viva Cinco de Mayo in late April/early May, the Austin Fine Arts Festival, at the beginning of April, and the Old Pecan Street Fall Arts Festival in late September.

This latter event began more than 30 years ago to provide family friendly, free admission venue to collect arts and crafts from local and national artists and artisans, experience live music, theater plays, comedy, magic, poetry, film, parades, and take part of a long standing Austin tradition. More than 300,000 people attend this event every year, and festival promoters estimate it generates more than $43 million for the local economy.

Another long-standing, grass-roots festival is Eeyore’s Birthday Party which occurs every year in late April at Pease Park. According to Austin American-Statesman writer Anita Powell. The party has grown considerably since its inception in 1963 by a group of University of Texas students. The free-spirited celebration usually features Maypole dancing, costume contests, a hippie queen pageant, food, birthday cake and entertainment by local bands. This festival, perhaps more than any other, reflects the spirit that Austin is famous (or infamous) for and that inspired the unofficial slogan for the city: “keep Austin weird”.

What about bamboo, wine, watermelon and chili peppers? The Bamboo Festival is presented at Zilker Botanical Gardens in late August every year and features “all things bamboo”. There are at least two important wine festivals in the area: the Texas Hill Country Wine and Food Festival in early April and the Austin Wine Festival in late May. The Chili Pepper Fiesta is held in the town of Elgin, just east of Austin, on the second Saturday in September. The Luling Watermelon Thump in June garners national attention every year with its watermelon seed spitting contest.

All these festivals reflect what the city of Austin has been about through most of its history. It fosters and encourages creativity, diversity, freedom of expression and the celebration of the hard work and enterprise of its citizens.

Film Trailers That Increases the Curiosity About the Movie

Trailers are basically some exciting scenes of the film that are showcased for its promotion before the film is being released. They are actually a set of selected scenes from the films concerned that would attract cinema goers. The main objective of a film trailer is to make the people excited for the film and raise a curiosity among them for the film just before the release. Normally the sets of scenes in trailers are not as if it will appear in the film but would consist of just the exciting ones. Generally, a trailer lasts not more than two and a half minutes.

Sometimes the movie trailers used for promoting the movie would not be the included in the original movie. Movie trailers are designed and edited in such a way that the watchers are just charmed by its magic and makes sure that they are going to watch the film. Keeping this fact in mind the catchy, striking, electrifying excerpts of the films are taken and transformed into sequences of the trailers.

The above mentioned fact can be proved with these examples. In the film ‘Terminator 2: Judgment Day’ the trailers included some sophisticated special effects scenes, that were never intended to be used in the film. But the trailers created a major hype among the audience and the film became a blockbuster. Hitchcock’s Psycho used this same technique in the year 1960. The trailer of the film featured that the famous director was offering a guided tour of Bates Motel and in the end arriving at the infamous shower. He throws the curtain of the shower and the chilling blood curdling scream is revealed.

Sometimes movie trailers are shown very much earlier than the movie?s exact release date. This is done to create a hype about the film such that huge crowd is drawn at the release of the film. For example the trailers of the movie Miramax’s Hero were released two years before its full release.

Sometimes the people who are behind the making of the trailers start their work along make the trailers start on with their work while the film is still in its making process. This happens because the trailer editor can work right from the unedited version of the film. The editor can use any particular shot or footage that may or may not be used in the final version of the film or movie. Not only shots, sometimes the editor uses music also which is not necessarily used in the original soundtrack of the movie.

The contents of a kino trailer generally include the logos of the production company and the distributor, and a list of the names of major cast and crew. One can say that to some extent the trailers are the outputs of extensive market research that are conducted or based on the various locations. Now-a-days trailers are such an important part of the film publicity that one can find agencies called trailer houses that specialize in creating trailers.

Mehmetcik Grape Festival

Grapes and Vine trees are extremely common in Mehmetcik and this has inspired organizers to name the festival with this title. The festival was announced to the public with a press conference that took place ten days before the actual event. The Mayor of Mehmetcik Ahmet Beyazit Adal?er attended the press conference with the Karpaz tourism advisor Zekai Altan and the festival organizing committee. Well known estate developer Ersav Homes, a PropertyNC client and regular attender of international exhibitions was one of the major sponsors of the events.

Adalier pointed to the 47 year history of festival and stated that years ago the aim of a festival in North Cyprus was to create shopping opportunities for the locals. He continues by saying that festivals before were more colourful and lively and that in the last couple of years cultural and art activities have decreased in number. Due to these reasons the organizing committee have decided to increase cultural and art activities in this years festival. With this festival the public gained the opportunity to watch 8 short documentary films four of these films belonging to Cypriots Uygar Erdim, Mustafa Fidan, ?erife
